Mazda Protege Clutch Fork Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to remove and install a Clutch Release Bearing and Clutch Fork on Mazda Protege?
    A:
In the removal of the component, the negative cable to the battery should be first disconnected before the removal of the transaxle. The second step is to remove the bearing on the lever by pulling off the retention spring, and then remove the lever by pulling the Clutch Fork off the ball stud. To check, you take the bearing and hold it with the outer race, then twist the inner race, pressing on it; it is supposed to roll easily and when it does not or is noisy then change it. Wipe a clean rag and ensure no damage, wear and cracks and do not immerse in a solvent because it is lifetime sealed. Inspect the Clutch Fork as well to check whether it is crooked or not. To install, apply a smear of high temperature grease to the inner groove of the release bearing, and then apply a thin film of the same grease to the transaxle input shaft splines and the front bearing retainer. Grease the Clutch Fork ball socket, Clutch Fork ends, and release cylinder push rod socket with high temperature grease and then fit the release bearing to the Clutch Fork. Install the release bearing and install the end of the Clutch Fork through the hole in the clutch housing and push the Clutch Fork onto the ball stud until firmly seated. Lastly, grease the release bearing side where it will be in contact with the pressure plate diaphragm fingers with a light film of high temperature grease and complete the installation by reversing the removal process.
