Mazda RX-7 Oil Filter

The Mazda RX-7 Oil Filter acts as a gateway to the engine, catches dirt, and lets the lubricating oil flow freely because the lubricating fluid is to be supplied while the rotary powerplant is being serviced. During the years of production of the sports car, Mazda indicated that the Oil Filter applied was a full-flow spin-on design that was installed immediately after the pump, so that all the pressurized oil entered the media that was comprised of either cellulose, synthetic fibers, or a sheet of mixed materials capable of entrapping up to 99 percent of the particles that were coming through it. The metal canister has an anti-drainback valve in case the oil drains out during the night and a pressure relief valve in case cold thick 20W-50 would starve bearings or when a clogged element is present. The standard filters are applied to normal commuters, but the RX-7, which is a high-revving engine, requires a filter with walls that are reinforced, a high capacity, and low restriction such that high volume pumps do not burst the can or fold up the pleats. Mazda provided two workable styles in due course. The first generations applied a disposable spin-on body that can be changed by owners as one unit, and the subsequent models were influenced by the trend in the industry towards service cartridges that are more environmentally friendly, with only an internal component replaced, but still have the same fit and filtration approach. This new version of the Oil Filter modifies the procedure and the impact on the environment, rather than the very essence of trapping the contaminants prior to them being able to scratch against the frail seals of the Mazda rotary masterpiece.

Mazda RX-7 Oil Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install an oil filter on Mazda RX-7?
    A:
The engine has the oil filter on the top left-hand side which is a throwing-away/non-cleaning, and reuseable filter. To loosen the filter, place an oil filter wrench in the filter with the handle as the top to avoid collapsing since some filters may not be easy to loosen, so a metal bar can be inserted through the filter towards the top resembling a T handle or long screw driver. At the time of changing a new filter cartridge, apply a thin layer of clean engine oil to the oil seal on the bottom of the filter and clean up the surface where the filter fits on the pedestal base. Install the new filter on the pedestal and fix it only manually, without using a wrench. Then pour engine oil into the sump where necessary, start the engine and look around the bottom of the filter, should there be any leakage, tighten the filter a little further, only with the hand pressure.
