The oil pan, situated at the bottom of the engine, is more accessible when the engine is removed from the vehicle, and it typically only needs to be taken off if the front cover is being removed or if it is damaged. To access the pan, either remove the steering components to drop it straight down or unbolt the engine from its mount and lift it slightly. Begin by draining the engine oil and removing the engine under-cover, then disconnect the bullet connector of the oil level sensor and the coupler from the oil thermo unit, except in California. Next, remove the oil pan attaching bolts and take off the oil pan, checking it for cracks or damaged plug threads. When reinstalling, apply a continuous bead of silicone sealer to the mounting surface of the oil pan and place the gasket on it, ensuring the surface is clean of excess sealer and gasket material. Apply sealer to the other side of the gasket that will mate with the engine, lift the pan into place, and tighten the attaching bolts to a torque of 5 to 7 ft-lb (0.7 to 1.0 m-kg), working around the pan and tightening the bolts gradually. Finally, reconnect the electrical couplers for the wiring and fill the engine with fresh oil, then run the engine and check for leaks.
