What precautions should be taken when handling Brake Light Switches to avoid damage on Mazda Tribute?

The switch should be removed and installed with the pedal in at-rest position or the switch will be damaged. On 2006 and earlier models, first un-hook the wiring on the switch disconnecting the electrical connector and rotate the switch clockwise to release the connector. Installation To install, switch the knob on the switch all the way anti-clockwise, then start the engine, press the brake pedal and keep it pressed, then insert the switch into its bracket then counterclockwise and then connect the wiring. In 2007 and subsequent models, when working on a 2013 or later model, delete the knee bolster of the driver side. Then, carefully clockwise 1/8-turn rotate the switch off and pull it out and unplug the wiring of the switch. This is the opposite of removal, installation.
