Mazda Tribute Ignition Coil

The small yet important component of a Mazda Tribute is the Ignition Coil, which transforms the 12 volts of the battery to 15,000 to 40,000 volts and causes each spark plug to ignite the air-fuel blend when needed. It is housed in epoxy around a laminated iron core, which supports two copper windings, a low-turn primary and a high-turn secondary, and, when the current in the primary is switched off, the collapsing magnetic field produces the surge that is sent to the plugs. Early model years employed a single coil which supplied a distributor cap and rotor, receiving the voltage via long plug wires. Subsequent designs, including the Tribute, converted to distributorless waste-spark coil packs, where each pack had two or more coils which fired paired cylinders with each crank revolution, and one spark was wasted but reliability increased. The new design is called coil-on-plug, whereby an Ignition Coil is placed directly above each spark plug, eliminating much of the wasted energy and eliminating large wires. Each architecture was selected by Mazda in line with the changing electronics based on the cost-performance ratio. The style does not matter; the housing can crack from heat, vibration, and moisture that afflicted certain Mazda years, causing hard starts, misfires, and highway stalls which occurred unexpectedly. The use of regular inspections, proper maintenance of plug gaps, and replacement of coils, typically at 60,000 to 80,000 miles, is applied to ensure that owners maintain sharp throttle response and the fuel economy numbers Mazda is boasting. Since the Tribute has an engine bay layout identical to other company models, it is an easy task to access the coils, and thus preventive checks are fast. Checking Ignition Coil resistance values with a multimeter against factory values is a quick way of unearthing concealed woes.

Mazda Tribute Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and clean ignition coils, and what should you inspect for on Mazda Tribute?
    A:
Take out the ignition coils and wipe them using a wet cloth and they must be completely dry. Check coils, cracks, damage and carbon tracking and replace coil in case of any damage.
  • Q: How to replace the ignition coil on Mazda Tribute?
    A:
To remove the cable of the negative battery terminal on 2004 and older four-cylinder engines, first loosen the electrical connector of the ignition coil pack then loosen the electrical connector of the ignition coil pack. The next step is to remove all spark plug wires of the ignition coil pack, and make sure to pull on the boots of the wires instead of the wires. Unscrew the four bolts that hold the coil pack to the mounting bracket and disassemble the coil pack. When installing, apply the interior of the rubber boot to silicone dielectric compound and then connecting each spark plug wire to the correct terminal of the ignition coil making sure the boots go in all the way and the locking tabs are in place. Once the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has been installed, it has to relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy in order to perform optimally. On four-cylinder models that use the 2005 and later engine as well as on all V6 engines, start with disconnection of the negative battery terminal and the cover of the engine. In case of V6 engines, the upper intake manifold should be removed when one of the ignition coils is removed off the rear valve cover. The intake air duct above the valve cover is to be taken off on 2013 and subsequent 2.0L turbocharged versions. Remove the electrical connector on the ignition coil, sliding out the lock when it has a lock on later models. Take out the coil mounting bolt or several bolts then the ignition coil by pulling it directly up. Apply silicone dielectric compound to the inside of the spark plug boot and then force it against the spark plug to place it into position. Installation is the opposite sequence of removal and when it is installed, the PCM will have to re-learn its idle and fuel trim strategy to achieve optimum driveability and performance.
