All newer models of 1994 and beyond have a front impact airbag system called a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) as compared to earlier models where only the steering wheel driver had an airbag to protect against a frontal impact. Subsequent models have an extra airbag unit on the right side of the instrument panel, which is operated by an SAS unit in the lower middle of the instrument panel, instead of sensors on the front of the car. Other important systems in these systems are the clockspring that supplies the battery to the steering wheel airbag and the airbag readiness light in the
Instrument Cluster. The driver airbag inflator device in the middle of the steering wheel is activated by the electrical signal sent to the bag nearly immediately, and the clockspring assembly sends the electrical signal to the bag irrespective of the steering wheel position. The passenger airbag is bigger than the driver airbag and it is attached in the right end of the instrument panel and has textured trim cover which tears in case of inflation. When there is a crash, the SAS provides power to the SRS when battery power is turned off as well as verifies the SRS every time the vehicle is turned on, which reflects its condition as indicated by the airbag readiness light. In case of a fault, the light should not be turned off, and the service is needed. To work anywhere around any of the airbags, it is very essential to disarm the system by moving the ignition key to the LOCK position, removing the negative battery terminal and wait a minimum of two minutes to allow the backup power supply to discharge. Never touch airbags with the opening facing the body, are not to measure the resistance of any SRS component, and should never throw a live airbag away: turn it over to an authorized repair facility to be deployed and properly discarded. Removal and installation of the components require steering wheel and clockspring operations to remove the airbag of the driver side and passenger airbag will not require any removal unless it is inevitable, then professional services are advisable. Equally, the SAS cannot be discarded and any necessary servicing done by a qualified repair shop.
