Mazda MPV Timing Belt

The Mazda MPV Timing Belt is a flexible drive, which ensures that the crankshaft and camshaft of the van turn in perfect synchrony, eliminating cases of valve-piston collisions while providing smooth power. Constructed of reinforced rubber, it is fitted around pulleys on the crank and on the cam, and is kept in place by an automatic tensioner and idler rollers that ensure that valve timing remains exact on SOHC and DOHC engines. Many Mazda drivers appreciate the Timing Belt as it is easily routed; it is quiet, does not require any oiling, and is less expensive than the previous chain or gear systems applied in the oil bays. With improvements in materials, the recommended service life increased by 30000 miles in the early designs, up to 60000 miles or more in modern designs, although adherence to Mazda regular service intervals is still paramount, as a broken belt immediately cuts the engine off and, on interference designs, may cause the pistons to bang against open valves. Even a dilapidated Timing Belt which drops teeth or goes slack can jump time and leave the engine rattly or unwilling to start. The tooth profiles between various Mazda production years changed to curved instead of square, which decreased noise and increased durability while maintaining the same fit on the same sprockets. Look for cracks, frays, or oil soak, and it is always good to change the automatic tensioner, idlers, and often even the water pump during replacement as the work overlaps. The belt helps owners of the MPV avoid expensive engine repairs by considering it necessary regular maintenance.

Mazda MPV Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a timing belt on Mazda MPV?
    A:
To take out the timing belt, drain the cooling system by first disconnecting the cable of the negative terminal of the battery. Then disconnect the upper radiator hose, fresh air duct, bypass hose of coolant, radiator shroud, cooling fan assembly, pulley. Disconnect the distributor to the right side of the engine and label and remove the spark plug wires, to give better access to the timing belt cover and removes the air conditioning belt idler pulley. Put the number one piston to TDC during the compression stroke and take out the drivebelts. Lift the front of the car and stand it firmly on jackstands and then loosen the crankshaft pulley and make sure the crankshaft does not in any way rotate. Take off the bolts attaching the timing belt to the right and left covers and record the different types and sizes of bolts to install them back. Ensure that the number one piston is still in the TDC position by checking the position of the timing marks of the timing belt sprockets. Take tension off the timing belt by taking off the automatic tensioner and check the tensioner pulley to ensure smoothness. Take off the upper idler pulley, ensure that the timing belt is labeled with an arrow pointing in which direction it is facing; otherwise, add one where the same belt will be used again and then roll the timing belt off the sprockets. Installation To check, install the automatic tensioner by checking whether it is leaking oil and change where needed. Clamp the tensioner to match the hole in the rod with the hole in the housing and then place a small Allen wrench or drill bit so that the rod is held back. Install the timing belt by installing the crankshaft sprocket followed by the lower idler pulley, left camshaft sprocket, tensioner sprocket, right camshaft sprocket and making sure that you do not disturb any of the alignment marks. Install upper idler pulley and automatic tensioner pulley and tighten the bolts to the desired torque. Once the belt is fitted correctly, take out Allen wrench or drill bit on the tensioner. Install the crankshaft pulley bolt and rotate the crankshaft two complete revolutions positioning the number one piston at TDC. Ensure that the three timing marks remain in the same positions and in the case the belt appears loose, change the automatic tensioner assembly. Lastly, install the different parts that were removed during dismantling.
