Mazda MPV Valve Spring Retainer Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Can broken Valve Spring, Valve Spring Retainer and Valve Stem Oil Seal be replaced without removing the cylinder heads on Mazda MPV?
    A:
Valve stem seals that are defective and valve springs broken can also be changed without having to take off the cylinder heads and are usually done with two special tools and a source of compressed air. In case there is no compressed air, a nylon rope of a specific length may also be used to ensure that the valves do not drop into the cylinder. Start the work by taking off the Valve Cover and the spark plug in the affected cylinder, or both spark plugs in the case of changing all the valve stem seals. Rotate the crankshaft until the Piston reaches top dead center on the compression stroke and do the same to each cylinder in the firing order. Insert an adapter in the spark plug hole and insert an air hose into a compressed air source. Next remove Rocker Arms and shafts and use compressed air on the cylinder which should keep the valves in place. When the air pressure is deficient, the other way around is by placing the piston in front of the TDC and filling the combustion chamber with nylon rope. Wipe the engine with shop rags to keep debris out of the engine and compress the valve spring using a valve spring compressor and take away the keepers. Once the spring retainer, shield, and the valve spring are taken off, look at the valve stem to detect any damage and make sure that it does not stick in the guide. Repetition of air pressure in order to hold the valve, lubrication of valve stem, replacement of a new guide seal. Take the spring and place it over the valve, fit the retainer and neatly fit the keepers using grease to keep them in position. Need to take the pressure out of the spring tool, disconnect the air hose, and refit the rocker arm assembly, valve cover and spark plug(s) then start the engine and look at the leaks and strange sounds.
