It is only after the engine is removed out of the car with the context of the engine assumed to be removed that the crankshaft can be extracted with the assumption that every other component like the flywheel, crankshaft pulley, timing belt, oil pan, oil pump body, oil filter, and piston/connecting rod assemblies have been disassembled. Measure the crankshaft endplay with dial indicator before it is removed, prying it to the rear and again to the front, and the usual crankshaft endplay is 0.003 to 0.010 inch. In the event that a dial indicator is not available, clearance can be determined using feeler gauges. Tighten main bearing cap or lower cylinder block bolts slowly then loosen main bearing caps or lower cylinder block with the same attention being taken not to drop bearing inserts. Install the main bearing caps or lower cylinder block finger-tight (with assistance ideally) and re-install the crankshaft, being careful about its insertion in the correct position, particularly in four-cylinder engines. To install, clean and inspect the engine block and the crankshaft, and place the block upside down, and scrap off all original bearings inserts, and clean the surfaces. Install new upper main bearing inserts in the engine block with the oil holes aligned then lay the crankshaft to the position. Measure the main bearing oil clearance with Plastigage; make sure that it does not get mixed up, and install the caps or lower cylinder block without disturbing the Plastigage. Following the tightening of the bolts in order, take away the caps to gauge the width of the Plastigage on the scale to see the clearance. In case of inappropriate clearance, test whether there is dirt or oil interference, and replace the bearing inserts when required. Wipe off any Plastigage grease on journals and bearing faces, and apply grease or assembly lube on the bearing faces and thrust faces in a thin coat and then replace the crankshaft. Wipe the bearing inserts and rub with lubricant making sure that no surface is oily. In the case of V6 engines, put RTV sealant around the engine block and then it should be installed with the lower cylinder block and in the four cylinder case make sure that the main bearing caps are in proper position. Install all bolts and tighten them to torque-to-yield, and tighten once only. verify crankshaft crankshaft endplay again and crankshaft rotation, check that it turns freely. Lastly, please fit a new rear main oil seal.
