Mazda Tribute Timing Belt

Mazda Tribute Timing Belt is the flexible fiber-reinforced drive strip that ensures that the crankshaft and camshafts move precisely in tandem, thus keeping the opening of the valves in harmony with the piston movement to ensure the delivery of power in an efficient manner and the prevention of expensive internal collisions. In contrast to the metal chains and gears of older overhead-valve designs, the belt applied in current Mazda engines is easily directed around pulleys, produces no noise, does not require any lubrication and provides a reliable service life of 60,000 miles or more because the rubber compounds are better. To maintain the belt at the appropriate load, a spring-loaded tensioner and supporting idler pulleys are applied to prevent tooth skip, which would leave an interference engine out of step and stalled. A single simple Timing Belt design is the only one that has been installed during the Tribute production years; however, later models have acquired curved teeth to reduce sound, which helps smoother operation compared to the straight-cut profile of the first units. Checking is also a crucial step, as cracks, missing teeth, ragged edges, or ponded oil or coolant indicate that the component must be replaced immediately, and considerate owners replace the automatic tensioner, idlers, and water pump during the same work, as the belt rotates the pump. Adhering to the Mazda maintenance schedule and timing the replacement of the Timing Belt as stipulated in the schedule keep performance sharp, fuel consumption at minimal levels, and make a Mazda always ready to start.

Mazda Tribute Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What are the steps and precautions involved in replacing a timing belt on Mazda Tribute?
    A:
The timing process is complicated, and serious problems with the engine may take place in case of errors, that is why only highly experienced persons may perform this operation. The first step is to remove the negative battery cable and air intake duct, spark plugs and other connectors. Drain the coolant and take out the required parts to expose the timing belt such as the valve cover and the Engine Mount. Make sure that the engine is in TDC on the Number 1 cylinder, and take out the water pump pulley and crankshaft pulley. Hoist or engine support via a hoist or engine support fixture should have the engine pushed up, the tensioner and the belt are removed, the hoist user should take notes of the old belt and components of the belt. Install the new belt in such a way that it goes round the sprockets first and lastly install the tensioner. Once the timing marks are matched, carefully turn the crankshaft to position the belt tension before using the check of alignment tool to assure that the check is fitted. Install all parts in reverse sequence and use appropriate tightening of all fasteners. With 1.5L and 1.6L engines, the same process should be followed with a difference that the direction of the timing belt should be marked and the condition of the tensioner should be checked. Fit the new belt, making sure that it fits correctly and it is not loosely tied.
