In order to take off the steering column, it is necessary to park the car in a straight position and unplug the negative battery cable. Then loosen the
Steering Wheel and set the ignition key to Lock position to ensure that the steering shaft does not rotate since otherwise, the airbag clockspring might be damaged. The next thing to do is to take off the steering column covers, the clockspring and the electrical connectors of the multi-function switch. Unless otherwise, pull the shift cable off the shift lever and cable mounting bracket. Indicate the connection between the U-joint and the intermediate shaft, and then cut-off and eliminate the pinch bolt and nut. Unscrew the steering column mounting screws, drop the column and slide it to the back, without leaving anything attached to it. To install it, align the steering column and fit and secure the mounting fasteners until they have reached the required torque, then fit the U-joint to the intermediate shaft, and fit a new pinch bolt and U-bolt nut, tightening it to the required torque. The rest of the installation is in the opposite sequence of the removal. Following a battery reconnect, the Powertrain Control Module will have to re-learn its idle and fuel mixture trim strategy to optimize the vehicle in terms of its driveability and performance.
