Mazda 6 Oil Pump

The Mazda 6 Oil Pump supplies pressurized oil lubricant, which keeps the bearings, pistons, and the camshaft cool and friction-free. It is mounted low in the sump and is driven by the crankshaft and pulls the oil through a mesh screen, pushing it through the filter and cooler and into the galleries to allow pressure to increase approximately 10 psi with each thousand RPM, eliminating metal-to-metal wear. The modern Mazda drive system uses a small gear-type Oil Pump, which is attached beside the crank and gear-driven or chain-driven, or in high-power models uses a direct drive system which fits around the crank nose to provide more stable flow at high frequencies. Older Mazda models employed a crankcase-mounted Oil Pump design whose driveshaft is to be inspected for rounding at the hex-ends during rebuilding. The two set-ups are the same in terms of their key components; a pair of machined gears to the dot, a spring-loaded relief valve, and a pickup tube that has to remain free of dirt to allow free flow. In the event that the gears are marked with nicks or when the distance between the gears and the housing is more than the specification in the process of an engine rebuild, then they should be replaced. An oil pressure switch can screw into the gallery, lighting a dash warning when pressure drops, whereas a sending unit can supply a gauge to provide real-time feedback. Widening bearing clearance racing style builds with higher volume Oil Pumps to ensure that coverage remains in place when hard acceleration and cornering occur, to ensure that Mazda engines attain a long service life for Mazda 6 owners.

Mazda 6 Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the oil pump on Mazda 6?
    A:
The process can only be done when the engine is out of the car, so the 3.7L engine is assumed to be out of the car and, therefore, in the process that is not applicable, disregard it. Start by taking off the Oil Pan and the oil screen/ pick-up tube assembly. Then take off the Timing Chain cover, timing chains and crankshaft sprockets. Loosen all the four oil pump mounting bolts by turning them one step at a time (three mounting on 3.7L engines), and then loosen each bolt, in small steps, progressively. In case of loose bolts, take out all bolts and oil pump, spinning the oil pump housing clockwise to detach it with the oil pickup tube on the 3.7L engines. Then pull out the oil pump cover of the oil pump body, and record any identification marks on the rotors then remove them out of the pump body. Wash and dry thoroughly, checking the rotors visually against apparent wear or damages; in case of any rotor, or of the pump body, or of the cover, being scored or damaged, the entire oil pump assembly is to be changed. In case the parts of the oil pump are not too worn, rinse the rotors in a clean engine oil and place them into the pump body, with any identifying mark placed as indicated during the dismantling process. Install the cover and screw everything in. When installing, rotate the inner rotor in the oil pump to align it with the flats on the crankshaft and then install the oil pump on the crankshaft and screw it firmly against the wall of the cylinder block, and counterclockwisely on 3.7L engines to fit the oil pickup tube O-ring. Attach the oil pump bolts and screw until tight, then screw the bolts until tight, but in a criss-cross, then tighten the bolts by gradual and even increments to the required torque. Lastly, fit the rest of the parts in the reverse sequence that they were removed, pour in fresh engine oil, and fit in a new oil filter before starting the engine and checking on any leakages.
  • Q: How is the oil pump serviced as a complete unit without any sub-assembly or internal inspection on Mazda 6?
    A:
The oil pump is serviced as a unit and none of it is sub-assembled or inspected internally. The first step is to drain engine oil and to take out the oil filter. Then remove the timing chain cover followed by the Oil Pan. To take off the oil pick-up tube, disconnect the spring of the end of the oil pump drive chain tensioner with a screwdriver, and then take off the two bolts and the tensioner. Unattach the chain to the oil pump sprocket pushing the oil pump drive sprocket with an appropriate tool in order to remove the sprocket bolt and consequently the sprocket. Next, remove the mounting bolts of the oil pump and the pump. To install, undo the steps in which it was removed, making sure to set all the gaskets to new ones and tighten the oil pump mounting bolts to the required torque. Lastly, during starting and idling of the vehicle, examine in the instrument panel whether there are any oil warning lights or not.
