- Q: What precautions and procedures are necessary for handling and replacing air bag components on Mazda Millenia?A:The vehicle has three crash sensors in the front part and one more sensor in the portion of the passenger compartment of the vehicle which monitors the deceleration during collision. In case these sensors come on at the same time, the airbag is deployed. The warning lamp is used to show any problems that are within the airbag system which is regulated by a diagnostic module that shows a coded warning in case of any problems. The recommendations involve disconnection of the negative battery cable and the clock spring electrical connectors during the replacement of any airbag parts because they should not be torn to pieces but they are supposed to be replaced in case they are faulty. Airbag wiring harness is not to be repaired, and the ohmmeter is not to be applied to test the airbag module in order to prevent unintentional deployment. Subsequent models have an extra airbag unit on the right side of the instrument panel, which is operated by an SAS unit in the lower middle of the instrument panel, instead of sensors on the front of the car. Other important systems in these systems are the clockspring that supplies the battery to the steering wheel airbag and the airbag readiness light in the instrument cluster. The driver airbag inflator device in the middle of the steering wheel is activated by the electrical signal sent to the bag nearly immediately, and the clockspring assembly sends the electrical signal to the bag irrespective of the steering wheel position. The passenger airbag is bigger than the driver airbag and it is attached in the right end of the instrument panel and has textured trim cover which tears in case of inflation. When there is a crash, the SAS provides power to the SRS when battery power is turned off as well as verifies the SRS every time the vehicle is turned on, which reflects its condition as indicated by the airbag readiness light.
