Intake stroke- During this stage, the intake valve remains open to admit air/fuel mixture into the cylinder and both valves should be closed during the compression and power strokes. During the exhaust stroke the exhaust valve opens. When valve timing is not timed correctly, then the performance of the engine will be highly influenced. On the 2.2L engine, the first thing to do is to loosen the negative battery cable and then take away the accessory drive belts and then the timing belt covers. Then, align the crankshaft pulley mark with the housing mark and loosen the crankshaft pulley and tensioner. Check the tensioner wear, take off the timing belt and identify the direction in which the belt rotates. Take a T-wrench and take off the camshaft pulley followed by a crankshaft pulley. The reverse order will be used during installation so that the timing marks will be properly aligned and the timing belt will be placed in the right direction. In the case of the 3.0L engine, unscrew the timing belt covers and upper idler pulley and unscrew the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system. Put the crankshaft marks in line, take off the timing belt and the automatic tensioner and then take off the camshaft sprockets. Install the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprockets, and torque them with the bolts and place a plane washer at the tensioner body to guard it. Press the tensioner rod, press a pin in and put in the automatic tensioner. Once the crankshaft pulley lock bolt is loosely tightened, the timing belt is installed, with no slackness and the upper idler pulley is installed. Adjust the timing belt and make necessary adjustments by turning the crankshaft to align the marks. When the timing belt exhibits wear or any other damages, it should be replaced with a new one, though such problems, which led to the old belt failure, should be repaired. When installing, wipe down the timing belt area, and place the idler pulleys and tensioner in place and that the sprocket marks are aligned correctly. Install the timing belt over the sprockers, place tension and ensure alignment after turning the crankshaft.
