Although the valve clearances can be checked easily, changing the shims can require removal of the
Camshaft(s), which some owners may prefer to have done at the dealer. For 1.5L engines, remove the valve cover and spark plugs, and set the Number 1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke. the number one cylinder's intake and exhaust cam lobes should be positioned upwards to check for clearance. With the feeler gauges, measure the clearance between the base of the cam lobe and shim and note down the thickness which required a firm sliding fit on all four valves of Number 1 cylinder. Turn the crankshaft to a clockwise 180 degree angle and measure and record the valve clearances for cylinder Number 3. Move further crankshaft turns to measure cylinders 4 and 2 also. If you have to make an adjustment, then replace the shims with new, correct height shims. Remove the camshafts to get to the shims, but record the valve clearances first. Employ a magnetic instrument to extract the shim and confirm its thickness, which is etched on the side facing away from the camshaft. If there is no marking, then a micrometer will be required. In an instance where the valve clearance is too small, one should install a thinner shim. Conversely, if the valve clearance is too large, a thicker shim is required. Determine the necessary shim thickness from the specified clearance and actual clearance. Once you have the right shims, oil the new ones with clean engine oil and place them in the recesses of the valve, before reinstalling the camshaft(s). All the cylinders must undergo repetitive clearance checking to verify that the new measurements are in line with the established parameter. Shims grouped with valves will be documented for each position, to allow future readjustments. Shims can also be interchanged between valve recess locations. After checking all clearances and there are no issues, install the valve cover, high-pressure fuel pump drive housing and brake vacuum pump cap and pump.
