In the 2.0L engine used in 2004 and earlier, the engine should be removed out of the vehicle to have easy access when removing the oil pump, though the pump pressure relief valve can be gained access to with the engine still in the car. The first step is to release the air conditioning system followed by the dismounting of the
Timing Belt, crankshaft sprocket and guide washer with the orientation of the washer being noted. Then take out the
Oil Pan and unscrew the bolts that attach the pick-up tube of the oil pump, and dispose of the gasket. The compressor of the air conditioning and its bracket are also to be removed. Then remove the tensioner of the timing belt and loosen the bolts connecting the lower crankcase to the engine block and transaxle gradually, retrieving any spacer washers and removing the gasket. Unattach the pump to the engine block, clean the parts and examine the rotors to find out whether they are worn out or damaged and replace them in case of necessity. The pump is not disturbed when the oil pressure relief valve is disassembled. The reassembly includes proper installation of the spring and valve, filling the oil pump with clean oil and alignment with the crankshaft followed by screwing bolts. In the case of 2.3L engine, it is necessary to remove the engine, to replace the oil pump as a unit. Once the
Timing Chain and the oil pan are removed, the oil pick-up tube and chain tensioner can be removed followed by the oil pump. The process of removal is called installation, and all gaskets must be changed, as well as the engine must be replenished with oil. With 2.5L engine, the same proceeds except that the chain tensioner should be taken care of and the oil pan should not be protruded above the front cover closing surface. In the 1.5L and 1.6L engines, the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket have to be de-assembled, then the oil pan and oil pump pick-up tube. Once Pump is cleaned and degreased, they should install a new gasket, they should prime the pump and then install it. Lastly, with the 2013 and subsequent 2.0L engines, the oil pump is removed as a complete unit, necessitating the removal of the oil filter, timing chain cover and oil pan then the oil pick-up tube and tensioner. The process of reinstallation will include changing all gaskets and checking specifications of proper torque, as well as oil warning light checks after starting the car.
