Mazda B2200 Distributor

The Mazda B2200 Distributor is connected between the ignition coil and the spark plugs at the right end to inject high voltage at each spark plug at the appropriate time, allowing the engine to ignite its air-fuel mixture and operate normally. The initial designs in this small pickup were a mechanical Distributor design Mazda applied in most cars of the time with a cast housing being pushed by the camshaft, a rotor behind a plastic cover, breaker points and spring-loaded weights that increased the timing as the engine speed increased, and a vacuum canister fine-tuned it when the throttle was light. The points were opened and closed to change coil current, but the arcing and rubbing block wear constantly changed dwell, so regular tune-ups were necessary and hard starting or rough power were experienced when neglected. This changed as Mazda revised the truck, and later B2200 models were fitted with an electronic Distributor which replaced the points and cam with a toothed reluctor and magnetic pickup which fed a solid-state module. This transformation eliminated a majority of the moving contacts, provided a more powerful spark, and held timing with greater accuracy, which made the system more resistant and emissions-friendly and reduced maintenance. Both designs still have the rotor, cap terminals, and oil pump-driving shaft, yet the finer control of the electronic unit at high revs is its great advantage. Although coil-on-plug systems ultimately replace the old-fashioned ignition components, a lot of Mazda owners still value the simplicity of the service and reliability of the spark offered by these units.

Mazda B2200 Distributor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the distributor on a Navajo while ensuring proper ignition timing on Mazda B2200?
    A:
In order to eliminate the distributor in the Navajo, it is necessary to disconnect the negative battery cable. For those with the spark plug wires attached, take off the distributor cap, but do not take off the wires, mark them in case they have to be released. Unplug all electrical connectors and vacuum hoses at the distributor, mark the relative location of the rotor with reference to the distributor housing and the location of the distributor housing on the cylinder head. Loose the hold-down bolt(s) and remove the distributor, inspecting the O-ring and replacing it, as necessary. To install without affecting timing, lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil, assemble the distributor aligning the marks made above it and clamp down the hold-down bolt(s) to 14-19 ft-lbs (19-25 Nm). Re-fit the electrical connectors and vacuum hoses, fit the distributor cap, re-fit the spark plug wires and lastly fit the negative battery cable then start the engine to test the ignition timing. In case timing has been thrown off, disconnect the spark plug wire of the No. 1 cylinder and pull out the spark plug, be sure the engine is cool. Rotate the crankshaft towards the normal direction and when compression is experienced at the spark plug hole align the crankshaft pulley mark to the TDC mark on the timing belt cover. Lubricate the O-ring, rotate the distributor shaft until the rotor points to the No. 1 spark plug tower and set the distributor in place with reference to the mark made earlier on the cylinder head. Install the distributor cap, reconnect the electrical connectors and vacuum hoses, reconnect the spark plug wire and install the spark plug in the No.1 cylinder. When the negative battery cable is connected, then start the engine and regulate the ignition timing, and then tighten the hold-down bolt(s) to 14-19 ft-lbs (19-25 Nm), once the ignition timing has been set.
