To remove the transmission, first disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Jack the vehicle up and support it on jackstands, then remove the splash shield from underneath the front. Remove transmission fluid from the pan and reinstall it. Next, remove the exhaust pipes and other components that get in the way of pulling the transmission. On later models, remove the performance rod and the cross rod. Take the torque converter cover off. Mark the torque converter and driveplate with white paint for orientation reference to reuse this part. Remove the torque converter to driveplate bolts with the wrench as the crankshaft is turned clockwise for access. To disconnect the speedometer cable, remove the starter motor and driveshaft. Then, take off the wire harness connectors from the transmission and unhook the vacuum hoses and the oil cooler lines. Remove the shift linkage. Using a block of wood under the oil pan, jack the engine up. Jack the transmission up with the proper jack, if available, using safety chains, etc., to hold it in place. Take out the frame of the power plant, then take out the bolts clamping the transmission to the engine. To remove the transmission, lower it just slightly to disconnect and plug the transmission fluid cooler lines, remove dipstick tube, and move the transmission back to disconnect from the engine block dowel pins while ensuring the torque converter is free from the driveplate. To make sure the torque converter doesn't fall out of the transmission, secure it in place, and lower the transmission from the car slowly. Before installation, the hub of the torque converter should be seated in the pump and bolt flange in position. Once the transmission has been fastened, raise it to position it correctly and level the transmission against the vehicle. Then connect the transmission fluid cooler lines. Using the white paint marks, align the torque converter with the driveplate. Move the transmission forward until the dowel pins engage (also the torque converter). Install the housing-to-engine bolts. Torque converter-to-driveplate bolts should be installed and tightened, followed by the installation and tightening of the power plant frame bolts and nuts. Take out the jacks holding up the transmission and engine, install the dipstick tube (with a new O-ring) and reinstall the starter motor. Attach the vacuum hoses, shift linkage, and wiring harness connectors for the transmission. Install the torque converter cover and driveshaft, connect the speedometer cable, adjust the shift linkage, and reinstall exhaust system components as necessary. Overall, you can also put your splash shield back in position, lower the vehicle, fill the transmission with the right fluid, run the engine, and check for fluid leaks.
