In doing away with the camshafts in the rear bank
Cylinder Head, the only
Timing Chain that should be taken off is the rear one, with both timing chains having to be taken off in the front bank cylinder head. On 2008 and prior models, once the timing chain is removed, mark the positions of each cap of the camshafts in order to avoid confusions, and then loosen the camshaft bearing caps one by one, tapping them in case it is difficult. Mark the intake and exhaust camshafts so that they can be installed correctly, and then remove them, and mark the rocker arms and put them into an appropriate container. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters out of their bores, and place them back. In the case of the front bank cylinder head, take out the water pump drive belt and oil seal retainer and do the same to the front camshafts, rocker arms and lash adjusters. In the 2009-2012 models more steps must be undertaken, such as disabling the variable camshaft timing solenoid and camshaft position sensor, loosening the lug nuts, and unscrewing the inner fender splash shield and rear
Valve Cover. Turn the engine over to place the rear camshafts in neutral and then fit a timing chain locking tool and label the timing chain and sprocket so as to align them. Make sure to loosen and remove the intake and exhaust camshaft bearing caps in an orderly manner, being sure not to drop the camshaft when removing phaser and sprocket mounting bolts. On the case of the front bank cylinder head, the same procedure is to be followed, but it has to be noted that it should not be rotated when the rear timing chain has been pulled away. Apply lubrication and then install the camshaft bearings, positioning the marks created above correctly and screw bear cap bolts in proper order. Check all components are in place before fitting the locking tool are removed and the installation done in the same order, making sure to look at the leaks and functionality after putting the battery back in its place and engaging the engine.
