Mazda Tribute Throttle Position Sensor

The Mazda Tribute Throttle Position Sensor allows the engine computer to know the extent of throttle plate opening so that it can mix fuel and air accurately to allow it to react to driver commands. The sensor instructs the fuel injectors of a Mazda by passing a voltage signal against which it compares data from engine monitors to give the vehicle more or less gasoline at any given moment, enabling the vehicle to accelerate, cruise, or coast without hesitation. The sensor on the Tribute was based initially on a potentiometric design where a small metal wiper passed over a resistive strip with resistance changing with the motion of the pedal. That contact style is effective, but as time goes by it may become exhausted, causing erratic readings, poor fuel economy, and limited performance. Subsequent Mazda models adopted an alternative non-contact design, where the throttle shaft is monitored through changes in a rare-earth magnet, and the signal is sent to an electrical circuit containing no moving components whatsoever. The upgrade causes the Throttle Position Sensor to become much more robust since it is no longer subjected to heat or vibration that can erode the sensing surface, and it remains accurate for thousands of cycles. No matter the style, a faulty sensor will normally manifest itself by poor mileage, non-uniform idle, or slow acceleration, and since the part may fail without warning, drivers are advised to replace it at the first indication of a problem to ensure that their Mazda remains on the road. Swift replacement returns the entire power of the engine control unit, allows the non-contact technology to revert to precise metering, and reinstates the primary benefit of the Throttle Position Sensor.

Mazda Tribute Throttle Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service the Throttle Position Sensor on Mazda Tribute?
    A:
This process is applicable to 2008 and previous V6 models, and 2003-2008 4 cylinder models as it cannot be performed on 2001 and 2002 2.0L Zetec models. In the 2009 and subsequent models, the throttle-by-wire system incorporates the TP sensor into the throttle body/motor assembly which renders it service inaccessible. Start with disconnection of the cable with the negative battery terminal. To remove the engine cover of V6 models, unscrew the fasteners. Then undress the TP sensor electrical connector followed by removing the TP sensor mounting screws and remove the TP sensor. When fitting the TP sensor screws on a four-cylinder model, be sure to start by hand-tightening the screws to prevent breaking the throttle body, and fit in reverse of when removing. Once the battery is reconnected, the Powertrain Control Module will have to relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy to achieve optimum driveability and performance.
