It is necessary to ensure that the engine is cool before commencing this process and apply penetrating oil to the fasteners of the manifold and converter. A catalytic converter is an essential part of the exhaust manifold, as is present in most models. In case of the front exhaust manifold, remove the cable at the negative battery terminal and electrical connector of the upstream and downstream oxygen sensor. Lift the front of the car and place it safely on jackstands and then disconnect the crossover pipe at the bottom. Unscrew the heat shield on top of the front exhaust manifold, take off the six nuts that hold the exhaust manifold in place and take off the manifold and the gasket. Removal of studs in extracting and discarding of exhaust manifold Studs: Use a stud holding tool or two nuts screwed together over a stud. The old gasket material and carbon deposits on the mating surfaces of the manifolds and the cylinder head should be scraped carefully without causing a gouge to the aluminum components. In case of leaking gasket, inspect the manifold and re-surface where there is a possibility of warping. Install the new light oil upon the threads on the exhaust manifold studs, fit the new manifold gasket to the studs and mount the manifold with the new self-locking nuts. Install the nuts, by tightening in the center first and then to the ends, to the required torque. The rest of the installation is an inverse removal process. In the case of the rear exhaust manifold, deconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal, take out the EGR pipe in the exhaust manifold and disconnect the connector with the rear bank oxygen sensor on the 3.0L engines. In 3.7L engines, the rear-bank catalytic converter is removed. Take out the nuts on the exhaust manifold flange, and decouple the crossover pipe and the manifold. Unscrew the six mounting nuts on the exhaust manifold and detach the manifold removing the gasket. Extract and discard the exhaust manifold studs using a stud holding tool or a pair of new nuts screwed using a pair screwdriver over a stud. Once more, remove all gasket material and carbon deposits on the exhaust manifold and the mating surfaces of the cylinder head taking care of aluminum pieces. Install the new light oil upon the threads on the exhaust manifold studs, fit the new manifold gasket to the studs and mount the manifold with the new self-locking nuts. Install the nuts, taking the ones at the center first, then the ones at the ends, and installing to the desired torque, then carry out the installation in the same manner as the removal.
