It is assumed that the engine block and crankshaft are already cleaned, checked and repaired or refurbished. Install the engine with the bottom side facing upwards, on the four-cylinder engine, install the oil jets on the four cylinders, and on the V6 engine, install the oil baffle plate and fix the bolts with thread locking compound and screw them to the required specifications. Unscrew the main bearing cap bolts and extract the caps placing them out in correct sequence in order to install them correctly. In case the original bearing inserts have not been removed, take them out of the block and the caps, wiping the bearing surfaces with a clean, lint-free cloth to ensure they are also clean. Wipe the rear face of the new main bearing inserts and place one in each main bearing saddle in the block making sure that the grooved insert is placed correctly and that the tab on the bearing insert is inserted into the recess. The oil holes of the block are to be in line with the bearing inserts, no lubrication is to be applied at this stage. Flanged thrust bearing should be fitted in the four cap and saddle. Cleanse the faces of the bearings in the block and the main bearing journals in the crankshaft and examine or clean the oil holes in the crankshaft. After making sure that the crankshaft is clean, lay it in place in the primary bearings. Crankshaft Before permanently fitting the crankshaft, the main bearing oil clearance has to be inspected. Prepare a few pieces of Plastigage and apply one on each of the main bearing journals of the crankshaft, clean the face of the bearings in the caps and install them in their proper positions with arrows indicating the front of the engine, but taking care not to disturb the Plastigage. Install the main bearing cap bolts in three stages in a clockwise direction beginning with the center main and then to the ends without rotating the crankshaft. Unscrew the bolts and be careful when removing the main bearing caps so as to avoid stirring the Plastigage. Divide the width of the crushed Plastigage on each journal by the scale printed on the envelope to determine the main bearing oil clearance, and see that the specifications are correct. When the clearance is not given as specified, it is important to check that no dirt or oil was used at the time of measurement and in that case, scrape off all traces of Plastigage material on the main bearing journals and bearing faces. Being very careful, remove the crankshaft, clean the surfaces of the bearers in the block, and rub a thin, uniform coat of moly-base grease or engine assembly lube on each bearing surface, such as the thrust faces. Install crankshaft again in the block and lubricate the faces of bearings inside the caps, and replace the caps back in their original positions pointing in the direction of the front of the engine. Installation Attach bolts and tighten them, except those attaching the thrust bearing caps, to the required-torque, in three steps, beginning at the center and moving toward the end, and then tighten the main bearing cap bolts to the recommended torque, again starting at the center and proceeding to the outer ends. Tap the crankshaft forward and astern to align the main bearing and crankshaft thrust surfaces, then tighten the main bearing cap bolts in three steps, starting at the center and moving to the extremes. Rotate crankshaft a number of times by hand to ensure there is no binding and last but not the least, verify endplay on crankshaft using feeler gauges or dial indicator which should be appropriate provided that thrust faces are not worn or damaged and new bearings are fitted. Fit the new rear main oil seal. In the given case of four-cylinder engine, prive the balance shafts and bushings in the block, lubricate the journals and bushings using engine assembly lube, and carefully insert the balance shafts into their bores, and make sure that they are correctly oriented. bolt on the thrust plate and tighten them to desired torque, check the smooth running of the balance shafts manually and then install the timing chain and balance shaft chain.
