To install or take off the timing belt in different Mazda models, one should start with a safe position of the vehicle and then a right front wheel and splash shield should be removed and the position should be accessed. Unscrew the loosening of the alternator mounting bolts, take the tension off the belts and take out the alternator belt. Loose the upper timing belt cover and gasket, then the front pulley of the crankshaft hub, and then the lower timing belt cover and gasket. Turn the engine clockwise till the camshaft pulley notch matches the V-notch on the top of the front housing and the crankshaft pulley notch matches the arrow on the front housing. In case the belt has lost track of time, give the crankshaft marks first. Unscrew the tensioner lockbolt, take out the tensioner spring and indicate the direction of rotation on the belt in case the same can be reused. Check the tensioner and check the belt to see how it is damage free. To install it, a tensioner must be positioned on an intake valve side, a new or reused belt with the correct rotation direction should be installed and should be engaged with the pulleys properly. Install the spring of tensioner, rotate the engine to ensure that the camshaft pulley is back to its position and tighten the tensioner lockbolt. Test the pressure on the belt and adjust where needed. Fit the timing belt covers, front pulley and alternator belt making sure they are well tensioned. Lastly, fit the splash shield and right front wheel and then lower the vehicle. In the models with 1988-89, the battery can be disconnected, spark plug wires and plugs should be removed, and next, the engine side cover, then the accessory drive belts and timing belt covers. Install the timing belt pulley lockbolt, place the timing marks and install the new belt, making sure they are stretched out correctly and aligned correctly. In the case of the 1986-89 323 Non-Turbo, the engine side cover, the belts, and the pulleys are removed, and then steps to be followed to remove and install the timing belts are followed, making sure that all marks are proper. In the case of a 1988-89 323 Turbo, the support must be made by supporting the engine and remove the required parts after which the same alignment and installation should be made. In the case of the 929, decompress fuel, disconnect battery, empty cooling system, remove spark plugs and other parts and then take off the timing belt. Load the tensioner, fix and make sure that all timing marks are in place before assembly. Installation Reconnect all components and fill up the cooling system, as well as check ignition timing where necessary.
