The 2.2L manual transmission engine used has a mechanically driven fuel pump, which is mounted on the right side of the head, driven by the camshaft. In order to examine the fuel pump, it is essential to disconnect the fuel pump with the negative battery cable and the fuel line off the carburetor. Next, connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel line, and dismount the fuel return hose on the fuel pump, and stuff the outlet. Install the negative battery cable again and engage starter and observe the fuel pressure at idle which should be between 3.7-4.7 psi; otherwise the pump would need replacement. Once the engine has been switched off, disconnection of the negative battery cable, deconnection of the fuel gauge and reconnection of the fuel lines is necessary then the negative battery cable is reconnected. To remove and install, first remove the negative battery cable, and then disconnect and reconnect the inlet, outlet, and return hoses at the fuel pump. Unscrew the mounting bolts to extract the fuel pump, insulator and gaskets. To install, clean the gasket mating surfaces, replace the gaskets and the insulator and fuel pump and affix them with mounting bolts of a tightening range of 14-19 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm). Lastly, reconnect the fuel lines, negative battery cable, and then start the engine and check the leaks.
