- Q: How to remove and install the thermostat housing on Mazda 3?A:To replace the thermostat assembly, initially, one has to detach the cable on the negative terminal of the battery by lifting up the battery cover. Lift the car on jackstands and take off the splash covers. Drain the cooling system, preserve the coolant in case it is in good condition. Get the coolant expansion tank out of the way and then unhook the drivebelt(s) and either the drivebelt tensioner or idler pulley based on the type of engine. Follow the lower radiator hose to the engine until you find the thermostat housing. Unscrew the hose clamps and loosen the bypass hose and lower radiator hose out of the housing, and use adjustable pliers to loosen the seal, if it is necessary. In case the cover of the thermostat housing is corroded or pitted, then change. Take out the bolts of the thermostat housing and unscrew the housing, but be careful that the thermostat is a part of the housing and cannot be taken out. To install, wipe off the sealing areas and examine the hoses and replace them as necessary. Install a new gasket of type O-ring in the housing groove and the thermostat housing can be installed by screwing on bolts to the required torque. Add the cooling system, then turn on the engine, get the engine up to a normal working temperature and examine any leaks and check the thermostat functionality.

In case of carbureted engines, take out the air cleaner assembly, and then loosen the upper radiator hose, and the nuts or bolts holding the thermostat housing cover. To install, install a new gasket and install the thermostat with the jiggle pin side up, and install the cover and secure-up the retaining hardware. Re-attach the top radiator hose and clamp and re-attach the air cleaner assembly (where needed) and attach the bottom radiator hose, then fill the radiator with the correct coolant mix and then start the engine to test the leaks. In the case of 1986-89 car models, place a pan under the radiator drain plug, open the drain plug to empty the cooling system and clean the drain pan in case the coolant can be reused. Detach the upper radiator hose by loosening the hose clamp then detach the water thermoswitch terminal at thermostat cover. Unscrew the bolts to lift up the cover and then unscrew the thermostat and gasket scraping away all old gasket material on the mating surfaces. Installation: To install, a new gasket must be put on the housing, the thermostat is to be installed with the jiggle pin face up and the cover with the retaining bolts. Re-fortress the water thermoswitch connector, insert the upper radiator hose and line the marks and tighten the clamp. Always make sure that the drain plug has been closed, pour in the appropriate coolant mixture, and then start the engine to check whether there is any leakage.
