Take out the fuel tank filler cap to release the pressure in the fuel tank and then release the pressure in the fuel system. Unplug the cable of the negative battery terminal and take out the rear seat cushion. The second step is to take off the screws at the fuel pump access cover and the electrical connector at the fuel pump module. Lift the back of the car and hold it in jackstands. Unscrew the hose clamps and unuse the fuel filler neck hose and the EVAP system breather hose to the tank. Disconnect the exhaust pipe and the fuel tank heat shield. Tie down the fuel tank, and then loosen the straps of the fuel tank and remove the fuel tank retaining strap bolts, loosen the straps and then lower the fuel tank very carefully. The opposite of removal is installation which makes sure that the fuel tank strap bolts are tightened. Reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal and start the engine and look at the fuel leaks.

Is the procedure for removing and installing a fuel tank easier to perform with an empty fuel tank on Mazda 6?

The following procedure is much easier to perform if the fuel tank is empty. Remove the fuel tank filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel supply line quick-connect fitting from the fuel pump module. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the exhaust pipe. Loosen the hose clamps and disconnect the fuel filler neck hose and EVAP system Remove the splash shield (if equipped). Support the fuel tank securely, then remove the fuel tank retaining strap bolts. Remove the straps and carefully lower the fuel tank. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the fuel tank strap bolts securely. Reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal, then start the engine and check for fuel leaks.
