Prior to performing this procedure, obtain a multimeter to align the neutral safety switch that is located on the lower left front side of the transaxle during installation. To begin, take off the battery cover. Then, unplug the cable from the negative battery terminal. After that, remove the upper engine cover. Pull up on each side and lift it off the mounting posts in the middle. After that, take the battery as well as the tray out of the grill. To remove the underbody cover, position the shift lever in Neutral and raise the vehicle then support on jackstands.Start by disconnecting the electrical connector from the neutral safety switch. After this, remove the retaining clip from the selector cable to manual shift lever and pull the end of the shift cable off the ball stud on the manual control lever. Take off the manual control lever and unlock nut and washer by using an appropriate tool to immobilize the manual control lever. This will prevent the likelihood of damaging the manual lever when loosening the nut. After that, remove the neutral safety switch with the sensor mounting bolts removed. For installation, position the shift lever to Neutral and locate the groove in the manual shift lever at the eleven o'clock position. Using the multimeter, connect the leads to pins B and C on the neutral safety switch. Locate the protrusion of the switch, where it mounts onto the manual shaft, and rotate it until the resistance is 750 ohms. Place the switch on the manual shaft, protrusion into the groove, and loosely install the switch mounting bolts. Prior to completely tightening the bolts, verify the resistance again to confirm that it reads 750 ohms, then proceed with bolting; otherwise readjust the switch accordingly. After installing the manual lever, lock washer, and nut, tighten the nut securely. Ensure the manual lever does not turn while you are tightening, or it may cause damage. Before connecting the shift cable to the manual control lever, check whether the manual lever is set to the DRIVE position and whether the manual control lever marks align with the neutral safety switch marks. Finish the installation by reconnecting the electrical connector of the neutral safety switch and reversing the removal steps. After lowering the vehicle, verify that the engine only starts in Park or Neutral.
