In order to eliminate the distributor in the Navajo, it is necessary to disconnect the negative battery cable. For those with the spark plug wires attached, take off the distributor cap, but do not take off the wires, mark them in case they have to be released. Unplug all electrical connectors and vacuum hoses at the distributor, mark the relative location of the rotor with reference to the distributor housing and the location of the distributor housing on the cylinder head. Loose the hold-down bolt(s) and remove the distributor, inspecting the O-ring and replacing it, as necessary. To install without affecting timing, lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil, assemble the distributor aligning the marks made above it and clamp down the hold-down bolt(s) to 14-19 ft-lbs (19-25 Nm). Re-fit the electrical connectors and vacuum hoses, fit the distributor cap, re-fit the spark plug wires and lastly fit the negative battery cable then start the engine to test the ignition timing. In case timing has been thrown off, disconnect the spark plug wire of the No. 1 cylinder and pull out the spark plug, be sure the engine is cool. Rotate the crankshaft towards the normal direction and when compression is experienced at the spark plug hole align the crankshaft pulley mark to the TDC mark on the timing belt cover. Lubricate the O-ring, rotate the distributor shaft until the rotor points to the No. 1 spark plug tower and set the distributor in place with reference to the mark made earlier on the cylinder head. Install the distributor cap, reconnect the electrical connectors and vacuum hoses, reconnect the spark plug wire and install the spark plug in the No.1 cylinder. When the negative battery cable is connected, then start the engine and regulate the ignition timing, and then tighten the hold-down bolt(s) to 14-19 ft-lbs (19-25 Nm), once the ignition timing has been set.
